A brief synopsis of the StoryCorps story:

In a conversational interview with his nephew, John Alvin McGarity tells the story of his son, Keith. Keith was born with Down syndrome and several other health conditions and was not expected to survive childhood, but his loving family helped see him through.

Keith resided in several institutions before he was integrated into the community at a personal care home less than ten miles from his parents’ house. When Keith was at risk of being evicted due to zoning laws, attorneys at Atlanta Legal Aid Society fought to keep him in his home and were successful. The interview takes place on Keith’s 58th birthday and is a celebration of his and his family’s perseverance.
